Alberta Bans Trans Surgeries for Children Protests Erupt - Encounter Today - Blog

ALBERTA, CANADA: In an unexpected turn of events, Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta, came out with a video announcement that stunned Canadians – there will no longer be top and bottom surgeries available to children 17 years of age and younger, puberty blockers and cross sex hormones for children under 16 will now be banned, and a requirement for parental notification and consent before a student under 16 can change his or her name or pronoun at school.

Smith also implemented a requirement that teachers inform parents before a lesson on sexuality or gender takes place, as well as a ban on biological males participating in women’s sports.

Amongst all of the radical policies Canada’s federal and provincial governments have taken to degrade human sexuality as God intentionally and purposefully created it, this is a positive step in a direction towards restoration!

Premier Smith announced her intention to work with sports organizations to create women’s-only divisions and gender-neutral categories, in order to prevent any unfair advantages, potential risks, all while seeking to achieve a true ‘inclusivity’ in sport.

Parental involvement, age-appropriate education, and careful consideration of the unique challenges faced by young individuals is what makes the Premier’s policy announcement so balanced and indisputably reasonable.

Controversy

Despite strong reactions and condemnations of the policy move by Smith’s opponents, the majority of Albertans support the policy with polls such as one conducted by Angus Reid indicating that 88% of the population favors informed consent for transgender-related decisions.

Rachel Notley, former leader of the opposition party in Alberta, stated that Smith’s policy decision may be a violation of Section 33 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Section 33 of the Charter is known as the Notwithstanding Clause. The Clause means that even if the courts say a piece of legislation is unconstitutional, the legislature can say “thank you” but notwithstanding the court’s ruling, in this one case we will pass it anyway.

Ezra Levant, founder of Rebel News, said about the use of Section 33, “I think she [Notley] may be right, that Danielle Smith may have to use the Notwithstanding Clause to stop meddling, unaccountable judges from overturning her… but that’s certainly not illegal.”

Unsuspecting Allies

True North News in Canada spoke to several LGBT-identifying individuals in Alberta about the policy. “I’m supportive,” said Tiffany Gillis, a biological male who identifies as a “trans woman” from Calgary. “I think it’s a good middle ground of doing something that protects kids from making decisions they can’t go back on and also still respecting the rights of trans adults.”

“I have a responsibility as a parent to be there for (my kids) and support them, and I can’t really fulfill that responsibility if I don’t also have the right to know what’s going on with them at school,” said Gillis, who is also a parent.

Perspective

Some may view Smith’s move as not going far enough or that she is wrongly seeking to assist transgender-identifying individuals by bringing “transgender” specialists to the province for adults instead of having them travel to the Canadian province of Quebec as they currently do.

Whilst these critics have valid points of concern, the primary issue isn’t adults obtaining so-called “gender-transition” surgeries as they are fully developed and have the ability to deal with any ramifications of undergoing “transition” procedures. The issue here is with children, who are vulnerable and still journeying through a critical stage of development, both mentally and physically, by going under the knife or being injected by drugs that result in irreversible damage.

Putting an end to this practice in Alberta isn’t cruel or “oppression” as Calgary’s former Mayor has come out stating.

Once the door is opened for children to access these kinds of irreversible surgeries or for teachers to hide critical information about a child from their parents, societies are in the place of irremediable harm. This policy is preventative and that benefits everyone.

On a rolling basis, we now hear stories of children who underwent life altering surgeries and so-called “therapies” who are suing their parents and the system that permitted the abuse of their developing bodies and minds. What does that do for families of the future? It separates them and causes division.

God desires for us to live in unity amongst one another, most especially, amongst our families. On the issue of protecting children from these devastating procedures and all the negatives that they carry, banning children from accessing them is something all believers can rejoice over because as more children are prevented from experiencing the devastation such procedures carry, the less families will face divisiveness in the home or in the courts and the closer they will become as a result of more conversations being had between children and parents.
