A Third of Gen Z Have Been Aborted - Encounter Today - Blog

Between 1997 and 2012 alone, one-third of all children conceived were lost to abortion; a staggering reality that demands a somber conversation on the urgent need to protect life at every stage.

The most precise number available through readily accessible data is that 28% of children born into Generation Z were aborted. That would equate to some 800–900 million abortions, with abortion ranking as the leading cause of death across the globe. To put this into perspective, this number is five times the deaths in all wars in human history combined, ten times the fatalities of World War II, and equivalent to the eradication of the entire populations of the United States and South America combined.

Institutions like the Guttmacher Institute, CDC, UN World Population Prospects, and World Health Organization have shown that, during these 16 years, the world had 50–56 million abortions per year. That amounts, over the years, to some 800–900 million unborn children brutally murdered through dismemberment and poisoning, then thrown into our waste systems.

During the same period, there were between 130–135 million live births per year, for a total of approximately 2.08–2.16 billion births. Adding the number of abortions to this gives an approximate figure of three billion children conceived during this time. Of these, an estimated 850 million were aborted—a staggering and nearly unimaginable tragedy.

Why Do Abortions Occur?

The abortion debate typically centers around arguments regarding the personhood of the preborn child, abortion being “necessary” in cases of rape or potential health concerns over the child. The numbers, however, paint a clearer story regarding why abortions are sought out:

  • Less than 0.5% are due to incest.
  • About 2.8% are due to threats to the health of the mother.
  • Between 0.3% and 1.5% are due to rape.
  • About 1.5% to 4% are due to a baby’s disability or health issues.

Although these figures vary region to region, there are so other common reasons they are obtained which include financial issues, a partner’s refusal to have the child, disruption of schooling, parental age, or a desire to maintain a pre-existing family size.

Looking Ahead: The Changing Face of Abortion

After the overturning of Roe v. Wade, pro-life leaders began asking questions such as: “What is the next step of pro-abortion groups?” and “How will organizations like Planned Parenthood finance themselves?”

The answers swiftly presented themselves through mifepristone, an abortifacient. The emerging popularity of the drug also addressed questions surrounding the issue of funding as these pills could be sent across state lines, to locations where surgical abortions have been restricted.

Whilst dozens of Planned Parenthood facilities where surgical abortions were committed have closed down, a victory worthy of celebration, access to the abortion pill has proven more accessible and profitable for pro-abortion organizations than keeping the doors to a physical location open.

How Did Mifepristone Become So Accessible?

In 2016 and 2021, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) dramatically relaxed safety measures for the abortion pill, removing key safety requirements, amongst them, in-person medical oversight for women taking the drug.

Typically, a woman seeking mifepristone would need an initial physician visit to render the drug safe, especially after the six-week mark of pregnancy, when its use can pose grave danger to her health. But in 2021, the FDA deemed such visits “no longer necessary,” relying on admittedly incomplete and untrustworthy data.

A Call to Reflect

Human life is the most valuable gift on Earth, uniquely crafted and of infinite worth, yet it is being disposed of as if it is envogue.

The sheer number of abortions—850 million lives lost in just 16 years—forces us to confront this subject, not as a political issue, but as a deeply profound moral crisis. Those lives were not mere numbers but individuals, created with a distinct purpose and immense potential, deserving of love and protection.

The figures also force us to question what being pro-life means, not theoretically, but practically, from conception and beyond.

This reality demands more than outrage; it demands action and compassion. The reasons given for abortions, whether financial stress, fear, or life circumstance, point to deep societal wounds that must be healed. And to heal those wounds means to offer true support to women who have troubled pregnancies, both in practical terms like financial support and child care, but also emotional and spiritual support that honors their strength and dignity. It means advocating for policies that respect both the mother and the child, in the conviction that true justice advances the dignity of all human beings.

Losing a third of this generation highlights a foreboding trend: a growing disdain for the sanctity of life and women’s health. This issue brings to light that when guardrails are tossed aside in the name of convenience, it’s not just the unborn who suffer but the women who have to live with the physical and emotional consequences of the choices. This is not freedom; it’s an abuse of the vulnerable.

It is the responsibility of the believer to build a culture that cherishes life at every stage.

Building such a society where every child is welcomed as a blessing, not a burden, and every mother is supported, not abandoned begins with how we choose to live our own lives. It means holding firm to the conviction that life is not a commodity to be discarded but a sacred trust to be protected. It is only in embracing God’s view of humanity that we can begin breaking the brokenness that these staggering statistics lay bare and create a future where all lives are given the chance to thrive.
