People Over Fish: A Return To Dignity

People Over Fish - A Return To Dignity - Encounter Today - Blog

A big shift just took place: People have once again become the priority over fish!

In a memorandum issued by President Trump, he directed “the Secretary of Commerce and Secretary of the Interior” … “to immediately restart the work from [his] first Administration … to route more water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to other parts of the state for use by the people there who desperately need a reliable water supply.”

Trump went on to state how, “During my first term, the State of California, at the direction of its Governor, filed a lawsuit to stop my Administration from implementing improvements to California’s water infrastructure” and how “My Administration’s plan would have allowed enormous amounts of water to flow from the snow melt and rainwater in rivers in Northern California to beneficial use in the Central Valley and Southern California.”

“This catastrophic halt was allegedly in protection of the Delta smelt and other species of fish. Today, this enormous water supply flows wastefully into the Pacific Ocean.”

The memorandum went on to state that “Within 90 days of the date of this memorandum, the Secretary of Commerce and Secretary of the Interior shall report to me [President Trump] regarding the progress made in implementing the policies in this memorandum and provide any recommendations regarding future implementation.”

After horrific fires consumed vast swaths of California, taking people’s homes and livelihoods, getting help to affected people in the state was absolutely critical for the incoming President.

Perspective

Whilst this policy is common sense, the underlying message of this announcement revealed an all too important approach politicians in the 21st century often ignore towards those they represent.

There has been such an emphasis in politics and culture on protecting the environment that human beings have been painted as evil doers which are actively corrupting the earth. This view of humanity has affected policies and has even made its way into films and school curriculums.

So what is the Christian’s perspective on this matter?

First of all, yes, people are called to take care of the earth and in doing so, we are also called to subdue it, but at no point is God’s creation meant to take precedent over His direct image bearers!

There is a hierarchy in creation, a fact that is often overlooked and even demonized in today’s hyper environmentalist society where birds and sea life have been given more protections and considerations than human beings, both born and preborn.

Such a society is clearly out of order.

When God created humanity, He said that we, humanity, was “very good” whilst the rest of creation was distinguished as “good.”

There was a distinction made by God, not only in our make up but in our class within the hierarchy of creation. We were set above the rest of creation!

In conclusion, this policy is more than a shift in political direction, it’s a shift from previous administrations in how humanity is viewed and valued – and that’s no small thing!
