Republicans More Religious Than Democrats, Report Finds

A new Pew Research Center report reveals a clear divide: Republican voters are far more likely than Democrats to place faith at the center of their lives.
Key Findings
- 66% of Republicans believe in God with absolute certainty (vs. 41% of Democrats).
- 48% of Republicans say religion is “very important” (vs. 28% of Democrats).
- 52% pray daily (vs. 35% of Democrats).
- 41% attend church at least monthly (vs. 24% of Democrats).

The reason for the gap runs deeper than habits, it’s worldview.
Modern progressivism is inherently secular. It teaches that personal fulfillment is the greatest good, that feelings determine truth, and that satisfying personal desires is the only path to happiness. This stands in direct opposition to the biblical call to submit all we are to Christ.
The report found that the more progressive someone becomes, the less they tend to see the idea of God as true or helpful. Some try to blend the two, but they end up with a God who requires nothing and agrees with them on everything, which is functionally the same as having no God at all.
There’s also a chicken-and-egg dynamic: political beliefs can weaken faith, and strong faith can reshape political alignment. In recent years many have come to Christianity only after realizing leftism doesn’t work in practice. On the flip side, when people reject truth outside themselves, politics often becomes their religion, the north star that orients everything else.
This happens on both sides, but it’s more common on the Left because progressivism is philosophically opposed to absolute truth. True conservatism, at its core, requires acknowledging an authority above us and submitting to it.
The Growing Fracture Inside the Democratic Party
The Pew data shows sharp racial differences among Democrats:
- White Democrats are highly secular (only 17% say religion is very important or attend church regularly).
- Black Democrats remain strongly religious (60% say religion is very important; 65% pray daily).
- Hispanic Democrats fall in between but are still far more religious than white Democrats.
