Bible Quotations Could Land Canadians in Jail - Encounter Today - Blog

A senior Canadian government source has confirmed that the Liberal government has agreed to remove long-standing religious protections from Canada’s hate-speech laws in exchange for support from another political party, the Bloc Québécois, in order to stay in power.

The bombshell revelation, first reported by the National Post, centers on a planned amendment to Canada’s Bill C-9, the so-called “Combating Hate Act.” The change would eliminate the legal defence that has historically shielded Canadians who express religious beliefs, even if they’re labeled controversial by culture, when those beliefs are rooted in sincerely held interpretations of sacred texts such as the Bible or Quran.

Government Insider Confirms the Deal

“The removal of the religious exemption is expected to come via an amendment to the Criminal Code in the form of Bill C-9 at the parliamentary justice committee that will be supported by both the Liberals and Bloc, a senior government source confirmed,” the National Post reported.

Under the current law, Canadians cannot be convicted of wilfully promoting so-called “hatred” if their statements were made “in good faith” on a “religious subject” or based on a sincere interpretation of the Bible, Quran, Torah, or other religious texts. The Bloc-backed amendment would scrap that protection entirely.

The practical result? Quoting Scripture to condemn or call out abortion, homosexuality, or gender ideology could soon be treated as a criminal offence in Canada.

Liberal MP Already Called Bible Passages “Hateful”

The move comes just weeks after Liberal MP Marc Miller openly declared that certain Bible passages are inherently “hateful” and suggested prosecutors should be able to jail those who recite them.

“Clearly there are situations in these texts where these statements are hateful,” Miller said back in October. “They should not be used to invoke or be a defense, and there should perhaps be discretion for prosecutors to press charges.”

Miller’s remarks triggered immediate outrage from conservatives across the country with Alberta Member of the Legislative Assembly Dan Williams, Minister of Municipal Affairs, responding forcefully:

“I find it abhorrent when MPs sitting in Ottawa, or anyone in positions of power, use their voice to attack faith.”

“Here, Marc Miller, a former Trudeau front bench Minister and current MP, calls the Holy Bible ‘hateful’ and asks if prosecutors should be able to press charges based on what scripture you read in church or synagogue,” he observed.

“The wider implication is of course one we are familiar with from the media and from progressives in the public square: namely that Christians and Jews themselves are steeped in hatred,” Williams continued. “This intentional mangling of our faith is gross. Full stop. And those who are actually pushing this hate should be called out.”

Conservatives Launch National Petition

Within hours of the amendment news breaking on social media, the federal Conservative Party of Canada launched an urgent petition demanding that the Trudeau government abandon the plan.

The petition calls “on the Liberal government to protect religious freedom, uphold the right to read and share sacred texts, and prevent government overreach into matters of faith.”

Even before this latest amendment, Bill C-9 already granted sweeping new powers to police and prosecutors to punish speech that hurts someone’s “feelings” in a way deemed “hateful” by the state.

With the religious exemption now on the chopping block, Canada is sliding toward state enforcement of ideological conformity, and that quoting the Bible in public could soon carry criminal penalties.

This is the end result of a governing party who parrots “tolerance” as a virtue, a populous who is apathetic to attacks on their values, brainwashing via the government school systems which have told generations of young Canadians that their heritage is evil and, above all, a nation which rejects that their rights are God-given and that holds their leaders to account for the recognition of this truth.

All is not lost, although today, it looks bleak. God hasn’t moved from His throne and it is now on the people of God to make some decisions. This is no time for pointing fingers nor casting blame; it is a time for action and being bold as a lion.

For this is what we know to be absolutely true, no matter where our brothers and sisters are facing persecution:

“For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn[n] among many brothers and sisters. And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory. What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?” Romans 8:29-31
