On Friday, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution, put forward by France and Saudi Arabia, endorsing an “irreversible” pathway toward establishing a Palestinian state.

The measure, titled the “New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution,” garnered support from 142 nations, with 10 opposing and 12 abstaining.

Iran Nuclear Deal: Current Status and Israel’s Concerns

Israel’s UN Ambassador, Danny Danon, sharply criticized the resolution, declaring, “This lopsided proclamation won’t be seen as progress toward peace but as another empty gesture that undermines this Assembly’s legitimacy… This isn’t diplomacy—it’s performance.”

“The only beneficiary is Hamas…When terrorists are the ones cheering, you are not advancing peace; you are advancing terror.”

The resolution urges the Palestinian Authority to take the helm of a Palestinian state, backed by robust international support, while demanding that Hamas relinquish its grip on Gaza.

Push for Palestinian Statehood Recognition

Over the past two years, the call for Palestinian statehood has surged, fueled by widespread international condemnation of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Israeli officials have fiercely opposed moves to recognize a Palestinian state, contending that such recognition would embolden Hamas’s terrorism and sow seeds for further violence.

Global institutions have signaled a preference for the Palestinian Authority to lead a future Palestinian state, even though it was expelled from Gaza nearly two decades ago. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly stated that the PA will have no role in governing the territory.

A Bad Decision

Granting the resolution for an “irreversible” path to Palestinian statehood, as endorsed by the UN General Assembly, is a deeply flawed and nonsensical decision that risks inflaming an already volatile situation.

By pushing for statehood without addressing the entrenched realities on the ground, such as Hamas’s iron-fisted control over Gaza and its explicit commitment to violence, this move sidesteps the critical need for a stable, accountable governing body capable of fostering peace.

The resolution’s call for the Palestinian Authority to assume leadership ignores its weakened legitimacy and near-total absence from Gaza for nearly two decades, rendering the proposal detached from practical governance realities. Such a gesture rewards rhetoric over substance, this has the strong potential to embolden extremist factions whilst undermining any genuine diplomatic progress.

Furthermore, this decision erodes the credibility of the UN as a neutral arbiter by appearing to favor one-sided narratives over the complex security concerns of all parties involved, this includes many within the international community who carry well-founded fears of rewarding terrorism.

The resolution’s failure to demand concrete steps toward dismantling Hamas’s military infrastructure or ensuring Israel’s safety signals a troubling disconnect from the principles of a two-state solution rooted in mutual security and recognition.

Instead of fostering dialogue, this hollow proclamation further entrenches division, fuels instability, and erodes trust in international institutions to broker meaningful peace.
