In providential moments like these the potency of grief is swallowed up and eclipsed by purpose as we see the hand of God at work.
This morning I received news that 3 weeks ago one of my heroes, Charles Capps, had gone home to be with the Lord at the age of 80. I was shocked as I considered the loss and troubled that I didn’t know about this before now. I was about to lament the fact that I must have been so wrapped up with what God was doing in MY Church that I couldn’t look up or take time to notice such things when I realized the prophetic nature of what God had me invested in.
Right out of the gate, from the moment I was born again, the wisdom of Charles Capps has had a formative influence on my life. From his teachings on evangelism, faith and the creative power of the tongue, there’s no questioning that this man was truly an “Apostle of Confession.” Throughout the years, I have gleaned from his wisdom and grown from his practical “how-to” know-how.
At Encounter Christ Church, we do many books studies. As a Pastor for 10 years, I have always considered it my responsibility to introduce my parishioners to ministers who have had an eternal impact on my life, yet strangely enough I had never introduced them to Charles Capps. This was a wrong that had to be righted and that’s why I was so relieved when in the middle of February, I felt compelled by the Holy Spirit to get Charles Capps books and CDs into the hands of every member of my congregation.
I felt an urgency to get the revelation of confession that God used Charles Capps to communicate back to the forefront and we declared the month of March to be, “The Month of Confession.” By February 16th we were in talks with Charles Capps ministry to order his best-selling book, “The Tongue a Creative Force” and his CD series, “Calling Things That Are Not…” in bulk. After 10 years I was compelled to get this into people’s hands and to do it NOW! Why? God knew that this mantle was about to be released.
On Friday, February 21, 2014 Charles Capps told his wife Peggy that he would be “going home” on Sunday. He went to bed on Saturday night and woke up in Heaven about 5:30 Sunday morning, February 23, 2014. This is a man who lived what he preached even in his final moments on this earth.
My life will never be the same because of this general of the faith and I know that the transforming power of his practical teachings will continue to positively affect the lives of millions. I am more convinced than ever that it’s time for the Body of Christ to get back to the basics. In all honesty, each and every one of us could admit that we’ve gotten lazy when it comes to our confession and that we have neglected this revelation.
In honor of this great man of faith let’s all declare the month of March, “The Month of Confession.” Study it in the Word, preach about it in your churches and share it with your friends. There’s a double portion just waiting for those who are willing to receive it by faith.
