Israel: A Bulwark Defending Western Civilization

During a period of uncertainty in international alliances and an ever increasing threat to the values that have long defined the West; freedom, democracy, and the rule of law, Israel serves as a rock of stability.
Israel is more than its government, it is a nation with a biblical covenant and a critical partner in the defense of the values that are the cornerstone of Western civilization.
Its unique position in the Middle East, surrounded by enemies, makes it a frontline defender of the values the Western world holds dear, and its mere existence is a testament to the enduring strength of faith and freedom.
Israel’s Geographical Importance
Furthermore, Israel is an important geopolitical buffer to the spread of extremist ideologies that threaten not only the Middle East but the entire Western world. Its advanced military and intelligence services have thwarted dozens of terrorist plots, not only against its own citizens but also against European and North American targets.
Iran’s proxies, which openly call for the destruction of Israel and the West, are constantly frustrated by Israel’s forward defenses.
By confronting these threats directly, Israel absorbs pressures that would otherwise fall on Western shores.
It would be a grave mistake to see the current conflict as being regionally restricted; it’s a war of civilizations, and Israel’s victories over extremism protect the values of freedom and security that we in the West cherish.
Israel, America’s Best Friend
Israel’s status as America’s strongest friend in the Middle East is rooted in the shared Judeo-Christian values of the two nations. Both countries cherish individual liberty, democratic governance, and the rule of law, making them a natural antidote to authoritarianism that is dominant in the region.
No less significant is the spiritual affinity: Christians understand that Israel is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy (Genesis 12:3), this forges a cultural identity that transcends geopolitics. As Psalm 122:6 calls the faithful to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem,” America’s embrace of Israel manifests not only a strategic alliance but an affinity in the moral values undergirding Western civilization.
Discovering Judeo-Christian Values
Western civilization, its social, legal, and moral fabric, rests on Judeo-Christian values which are rooted in Judaism and Christianity’s shared heritage.
Core Judeo-Christian values include:
- The Sanctity of Human Life
- Moral Accountability and Justice
- Individual Liberty and Responsibility
- Compassion and Charity
- The Covenant and Community
These values aren’t only historical foundations but eternal truths that continue to be the basis of our civilization.
Israel, A Defender Of The West
Israel’s status as a bulwark of the West stems from its unwavering commitment to democratic governance in a region where authoritarianism and extremism otherwise prevail.
Despite unrelenting menace from terrorist entities like Hamas and Hezbollah, and hostile regimes like Iran, Israel is a staunch democracy that clings to free elections, an independent judiciary, and a free press.
These are hallmarks of Western civilization are rooted in Judeo-Christian values, they put a premium on individual liberty and moral responsibility. The fact that Israel can resist such pressure is a good sign that such values can endure even when faced with unremitting hostility. As followers of Jesus, we have a duty to stand with those who stand for righteousness, and Israel’s fight against terror and tyranny aligns with our biblical mandate to stand with justice and truth.
Israel’s portrayal of Judeo-Christian values makes it a worthy and unique ally in the Middle East. Its democratic form of government, rooted in the belief in freedom and responsibility of the individual, mirrors Western governments.
Israel has free elections, an independent judiciary, and protection of minority rights, unlike most of its neighbors, mirroring the Ten Commandments’ moral and legal principles and biblical justice.
The nation’s commitment to innovation—medical, technological, and agricultural innovations—echoes the Judeo-Christian imperative to be responsible stewards of God’s creation (Genesis 2:15).
Israel’s wars against terror and oppressive regimes align with Judeo-Christian contempt for violence and oppression. In opposing groups like Hamas and Hezbollah that scorn the sanctity of life and would subject the West to totalitarian domination, Israel is not just struggling for itself but for Western values of freedom and human dignity.
Its intelligence cooperation and military coordination with the West, particularly the United States, have prevented attacks that would destabilize free nations. For instance, Israel’s preemptive attacks on Iranian nuclear aspirations shield the world from a regime that openly pursues the annihilation of Jewish and Christian communities.
Modern Challenges and the Role of Judeo-Christian Values
Judeo-Christian values are faced with secular relativism, extremist ideologies, and cultural transformations that undermine traditional moral values today.
The rise of ideologies that negate the sanctity of human life or individual liberty—be it terrorism in the Middle East or moral decadence in the West, threatens the underpinnings of our societies. Israel’s steadfast adherence to these values despite existential threat is an example of fortitude. Its continued existence as a Jewish state, founded upon the same biblical tradition that underpins Christianity, is a testament to the abiding strength of faith to sustain a people.
As Christians, it is our responsibility to advance these values by encouraging policies and alliances in line with them. This includes standing with Israel, not only as a geopolitical ally but as a spiritual brother.
The West’s very purpose for existence demands recommitment to the principles of human dignity, justice, and liberty, values that Israel personifies in its daily struggle. By doing this, we are obeying the biblical injunction to be a light unto the nations (Isaiah 42:6) and that the legacy of Judeo-Christian civilization endures.
That is, Judeo-Christian values are not remnants of the past but living truths that continue to guide a free and just world.
Israel’s being a bastion of these values renders it an irreplaceable partner in the defense of Western civilization. So as we go forward into an unknowable future, we can be encouraged by these timeless verities, standing alongside those who fight for them, and praying for the courage of conviction to speak up on their behalf.
