America Is Going Sober

America Is Going Sober - Encounter Today - Blog

New data from Gallup suggest that alcohol consumption in America has dropped to a 90-year low and the movement? It’s gained the most traction amongst young people, signaling a shift in culture unseen in decades.

According to Gallup, the group has tracked Americans’ drinking behavior since 1939 and their views of the health implications of moderate drinking since 2001. The latest results from their annual Consumption Habits survey, conducted July 7-21, revealed that only 54% of Americans now drink, down from 67% in 2021 and 62% in 2023—a whopping 13-point drop in three years.

This paradigmatic shift reflects growing awareness about health and wellness, signaling a cultural turn toward practices that prioritize vitality and clarity.

Some of the most surprising news is how young adults are at the forefront of this transformation.

Amongst those aged 18-34, only 50% drink today, compared to 72% two decades ago. This most likely shift is due to this generation being armed with access to credible research that hasn’t been swayed by marketing campaigns that once framed “moderate drinking” as harmless or even beneficial.

In fact, 66% of young adults now realize that the idea of “moderate drinking” being healthy is a myth, and would rather adopt lifestyles that are conducive to brain health rather than pub culture.

Women are also leading this charge. In just one year, the number of women drinking declined 11 points to 51%, compared with 62% for men. This trend is a testament to increasing understanding of how booze damages hormonal balance and general wellness. Women are no longer buying the decades old marketing that positioned wine as a stress-reliever, instead choosing to prioritize their bodies and brain health over alcohol consumption.

Even amongst the 54% of Americans who still drink, habits are changing in a spectacular fashion. Only 24% drank yesterday (a record low) whilst 40% have not had a drink in over a week. On average, drinkers now consume just 2.8 drinks a week, a record low since 1996!

The culture of daily drinking, a fixture of social life, is vanishing rapidly, but what’s driving the change?

The accumulating evidence seen in medical research, including a 2018 report published by The Lancet, which confirms that there is no such thing as a safe amount of alcohol. The research concluded that alcohol is responsible for 100,000 cancer diagnoses annually in America and leads to 20,000 avoidable fatalities. A staggering 53% of Americans are aware today that moderate drinking can hurt their health, compelling a rethinking of deeply embedded habits.

Dr. Mark Hyman, a respected physician, sums it up well: “No amount of alcohol is safe for human health. The idea that moderate drinking offers health benefits was based on flawed research that we’ve now moved beyond. Your liver processes alcohol as a toxin because that’s exactly what it is. While your body has remarkable detoxification capabilities, why burden these systems unnecessarily?”

This shift isn’t just about saying “no” to a drink, it’s about saying “yes” to a clearer mind, a healthier body, and a life unburdened by outdated norms. As Dr. Hyman notes, “We’re witnessing a generation that values mental clarity, hormonal balance, and optimal energy. This is what progress in preventive medicine looks like.”

The proof is clear, and the trend is embedding itself into the culture – so it’s safe to say, it’s here to stay.

Americans are waking up to reality about the impact of alcohol and taking a path that is wise and sustainable. The question now is not whether or not this trend will continue, but when the rest of the nation will embrace this life-satisfying shift. The future is looking bright—and also invigoratingly dry.
