Australia Proves There’s No Such Thing As A ‘Palestinian State’

A deepening diplomatic rift between Australia and Israel threatens a decades-long bond that began with Australia’s support for Israel’s founding in 1947.
Since Prime Minister Anthony Albanese took office in 2022, Australia’s stance toward Israel has cooled significantly, culminating in a tit-for-tat escalation where both nations are blocking each other’s officials from entry.
This week, Australia barred Knesset Member Simcha Rothman from entering, citing his support for Israel’s fight against jihadist terrorists as promoting “hate and division.” This move, which bans Rothman for three years, has been criticized as hollow by Australia’s Jewish community, especially amid rising anti-Semitism.
Since October 2023, anti-Israel protests have surged, including a 90,000-strong demonstration in Sydney and synagogue arsons in Melbourne.
Albanese’s reversal of Jerusalem’s recognition as Israel’s capital and tepid support for Israel’s self-defense have further fueled tensions “down under.”
Additionally, his recent push for Palestinian statehood at the U.N., alongside claims that Israel restricts Gaza aid, has drawn sharp rebukes from Israeli leaders with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling Albanese’s policies a betrayal, while Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar retaliated by reviewing Australian officials’ visas and revoking those of two diplomats to the Palestinian Authority (PA).
Unlike sovereign nations like many of the sovereign nations where Australian diplomats reside within their borders, the PA lacks defined territory, sovereignty, or a functioning government. Its enclaves in Judea and Samaria are, at best, semi-autonomous zones under Israel’s broader control.
Ironically, as Australia prepares to endorse Palestinian statehood, its own policies inadvertently expose the lack of any meaningful Palestinian state. By alienating Israel and ignoring the complexities of the region, Albanese’s government risks not only a historic alliance but also the safety and trust of its own Jewish citizens.
