Final Hamas Hostage Freed, Returns Home - Encounter Today - Blog

Edan Alexander, a 21-year-old Israeli-American, was freed after 584 days of brutal captivity in Hamas’s terror tunnels.

Alexander’s release, secured through direct negotiations led by President Trump’s administration, marks a significant milestone in the fight against terrorism and a rebuke to the failures of prior policies that left hostages languishing in Gaza.

Alexander, a New Jersey native who made aliyah at 18 to serve in Israel’s Golani Brigade, was abducted during Hamas’s savage October 7, 2023, attack on his military base near the Gaza border.

For over 19 months, he endured unimaginable horrors—confined in a cage, shackled, starved, and subjected to relentless torture, known to his captors simply as “the American.” Yet, his spirit remained unbroken, and his family’s tireless advocacy, coupled with the Trump administration’s bold diplomacy, ultimately secured his freedom.

The negotiations that led to Alexander’s release were a masterclass in strategic pressure: Bypassing the bureaucratic inertia of previous administrations, Trump’s team, led by Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, engaged in backchannel talks with Hamas through intermediaries like Bishara Bahbah, a Palestinian-American businessman.

These efforts, combined with Israel’s unrelenting military pressure on Hamas, forced the terror group to capitulate without concessions—no ceasefire, no prisoner swaps, just the safe corridor needed to bring Alexander home. This outcome underscores a fundamental conservative principle: strength, not appeasement, delivers results.

Contrast this with the prior administration’s track record, which left Alexander and other hostages in limbo, mired in endless talks and weak policies that emboldened Hamas.

President Trump’s personal involvement, including a phone call with Alexander post-release, and his upcoming Middle East trip to push for further hostage releases, demonstrate a commitment to action over posturing.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also played a pivotal role, with his office emphasizing that military pressure was “instrumental” in compelling Hamas to act.

“This was achieved thanks to our military pressure and the diplomatic pressure applied by President Trump. This combination is a winning formula,” Netanyahu declared.

The synergy between U.S. diplomacy and Israel’s resolve proves that robust alliances and clear-eyed policies can dismantle even the most entrenched terrorist networks.
Alexander’s homecoming, celebrated in Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square and Tenafly, New Jersey’s Huyler Park, was a moment of unity and hope.

58 hostages remain in Gaza with at least 20 believed alive according to the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist group, has shown its depravity before, during and since the October 7th attack, and any negotiation with such an entity must be backed by overwhelming strength.

Thankfully, the Trump administration’s success has outlined a clear blueprint for future administrations—no concessions to terrorists, no tolerance for corruption like

UNRWA’s, and no hesitation in prioritizing American and allied citizens’ safety.
As Edan Alexander returns home to begin his healing process, let’s pray for his complete restoration.
