Incredible things are happening in the UK as research emerges indicating a significant increase in church attendance amongst young adults in England and Wales!

The research, conducted by YouGov and Bible Society, was labeled as “The Quiet Revival: Gen Z leads rise in church attendance” and points to trends believers can rejoice in.

Between 2018 and 2024, attendance amongst 18-24 year-olds increased from 4% to 16% with young men’s attendance seeing the most dramatic increase from 4% to 21%.

So what about church attendance in general? Over the last six years, attendance has risen 50%.

That means for every two people in England and Wales who went to church, back in 2018, there are now three!

Church attendance is incredibly important, so too is the development of an individual’s personal walk with Christ. This too was addressed in the report which states that “67% of churchgoing Christians read the Bible at least weekly outside of church.”

Similar to trends taking place in North America, the UK is also seeing a dramatic shift in the closure of the gender gap.

One of the key findings from the research came in the form of a question: “Why are people finding meaning at church?”

To this, co-author of the report, Dr. Rob Barward-Symmons, says that this most probably due to a lack of meaning: “With much of the population struggling with mental health, loneliness and a loss of meaning in life, in particular young people,” he said, “church appears to be offering an answer.”

“We found that churchgoers are more likely than non-churchgoers to report higher life satisfaction and a greater feeling of connection to their community than non-churchgoers. They are also less likely to report frequently feeling anxious or depressed – particularly young women.”

Another point the report highlights is how the “Church is alive and well!”
Bible Society’s chief executive Paul Williams says: “The Quiet Revival is a highly significant report which should transform the perception of Christianity and churchgoing in England and Wales. Far from being on a slippery slope to extinction, the Church is alive and growing, and making a positive difference to individuals and society.”

Not only has the decline in church attendance ceased in England and Wales, but the church is growing, and it is the next generation showing up in ever growing numbers. Praise God!
