Why Meryl Streep Playing Narnia's Aslan Matters - Encounter Today - Blog

Netflix is reportedly in talks with Meryl Streep to play Aslan, the Christ-like figure depicted as a male lion in C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia, but why does this matter when it’s 2025 and adaptations of classic stories are rapidly taking place? Let’s delve in…

“Barbie” director Greta Gerwig’s upcoming “The Chronicles of Narnia” adaptation that is all about rock and roll, for fans of Lewis’s work, this is a telltale sign something is dramatically off.

In the novels written by Lewis, Aslan is a talking lion who serves as Narnia’s guardian who and was first voiced by Liam Neeson in the original “Narnia” films.

And whilst a female Aslan may seem like the least bit of woke nonsense coming out of Hollywood today, it points to something much deeper than one might think.

This isn’t just about Narnia, it’s an attempt to feminize Jesus. In other words, gender swapping Aslan is about gender swapping Jesus.

Lewis didn’t write in Aslan as just any other character, he was intentionally created to represent Christ! This is most starkly understood when Lewis wrote Aslan as saying, “In your world I have another name. You must learn to know me by that name.”

The Root of the Shift? Feminism

Feminism says there’s no real difference between men and women, so stealing Aslan’s strength, courage, and authority is all an attempt to pretend those traits originate in the feminine. This new adaption, meant for release in 2026, isn’t about honoring the work of Lewis but rewriting truth to fit a deceptive ideology far too prevalent in society today.

This is the same instinct that leads people to create their own version of Jesus based upon what they, or the culture, deems to be acceptable.

No one can change who Jesus is, not even Hollywood, but what they can do is try to portray Him in their image, a “girlboss” Jesus who has all the strength and authority of a man and yet, is a woman.

And maybe that’s the whole point, they can’t “cancel” Jesus like they’ve tried to cancel everything else they don’t like, so they’re presenting a reimagined form of Him for the whole world to see.

Conclusion

Reviving the classics isn’t about breathing new life into old storylines anymore, it’s about defacing them.

If Hollywood had its way, it would have “canceled” several works which once captured the attention of viewers due to their so-called racist, Christo-supremacist, and far-right undertones. But because Hollywood couldn’t convince audiences to burn the classics, they’ve taken a different approach: to “reimagine” them.

But it won’t work.

In the end, these sad excuses for reboots will only send people back to the original material, where they’ll realize the real issue isn’t a lack of good storytelling—it’s that those behind the camera cannot create true beauty.
Hollywood can try to rewrite the Narnia series, they can try to make Aslan more feminine, but one thing they cannot do is change Jesus Christ.

He alone is the one true Lion and Lamb. Alpha and Omega. He is the beginning and the end.

And thank God He isn’t who we wish He was but is absolutely everything that we so desperately need, the Son of God, our Redeemer and Savior.

Thank you for your support.
