Institute of Peace Caught Funding the Taliban

Institute of Peace Caught Funding the Taliban - Encounter Today - Blog

In a stunning revelation that has sent shockwaves through Washington, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), spearheaded by Elon Musk and backed by the Trump administration, has uncovered what many conservatives have long suspected: the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP), a taxpayer-funded nonprofit, has been entangled in a web of fraud, waste, and abuse—including direct financial support to the Taliban.

This bombshell, dropped on April 1, 2025, confirms the worst fears of those who have criticized the bloated, unaccountable bureaucracy that masquerades as benevolence in the nation’s capital.

The USIP, established in 1984 under President Ronald Reagan, was intended to promote peace and conflict resolution worldwide. With an annual budget of $55 million from Congress—supplemented by private donations—it has long positioned itself as a noble advocate for American values abroad.

But DOGE’s aggressive investigation has ripped the mask off this so-called “Institute of Peace,” revealing a disturbing reality: instead of fostering stability, it was funneling money to one of America’s most notorious enemies, the Taliban.

According to Elon Musk, DOGE engineers recovered a terabyte of financial data that USIP officials frantically tried to delete. “They don’t understand technology,” Musk quipped, “so we recovered it.”

What they found was damning: detailed records of financial transfers to Taliban leadership and other questionable entities in Afghanistan and Iraq. This wasn’t a clerical error or a misguided grant—it was a systematic betrayal of American taxpayers, who were footing the bill for an organization that funded the very groups responsible for killing U.S. soldiers and destabilizing the region.

This is Exhibit A in the case against the unchecked swamp that has thrived in Washington for decades.

The USIP’s actions fit a pattern of federal overreach and hypocrisy: an agency cloaked in the language of peace and diplomacy, yet secretly bankrolling terror. It’s the kind of duplicity that has fueled distrust in government institutions—a distrust that President Trump and his allies have vowed to dismantle.

DOGE’s takeover of the USIP headquarters in March, aided by D.C. police and FBI agents, was a dramatic but necessary step to root out this corruption. The institute’s leadership resisted, claiming independence from executive oversight, but their protests crumbled when the evidence came to light.

The implications? Staggering.

While the Biden administration was still sending aid to Afghanistan post-withdrawal—aid that conservatives criticized as naive at best and treasonous at worst—the USIP was quietly ensuring that Taliban coffers stayed full.

This wasn’t just incompetence; it was a deliberate act, concealed by a bureaucracy that assumed it could operate with impunity.

The attempt to scrub the records only underscores the guilt.

This scandal also raises broader questions about the foreign policy establishment.

For years, politicians and advocates alike have warned that the U.S. government’s “peacebuilding” efforts often prop up corrupt regimes and terrorist groups under the guise of diplomacy.

The USIP’s Taliban funding is a smoking gun—proof that the so-called experts in D.C. have been playing a dangerous game with American lives and taxpayer dollars.

Half a billion dollars a year, some speculate, could have been laundered through such schemes over decades.

While that’s conjecture, the recovered data demands a full investigation.
The Trump administration’s response has been swift and decisive.

DOGE’s mission to slash government waste has already led to mass firings at USIP, with most of its D.C.-based staff terminated on March 29. Overseas employees remain in limbo, but the institute’s days as a freewheeling slush fund are numbered.

Critics on the left are decrying this move as they always do, calling it an overreach, but conservatives see it as justice long overdue.

The USIP wasn’t a federal agency in the traditional sense, they argue, but its reliance on congressional funding made it fair game for accountability.

Fair is fair. If you’re taking the people’s money, you should have to answer to the people.

Skepticism towards elite institutions that have dominated foreign policy is at an all time high in America and the fall of USIP isn’t just a win for transparency but a blow to the entrenched interests that have profited from endless wars and backroom deals.

DOGE, with its unapologetic approach, has done what Congress and the courts couldn’t—or wouldn’t—do: expose the rot and start the cleanup.

The Taliban may have gotten their payday, but thanks to Musk and Trump, the gravy train has been derailed. It’s a messy fight, but one Americans are cheering from the sidelines.

Peace, it turns out, came at too high a price—until DOGE stepped in.
