Dept of Education to be Abolished

Another campaign promise is about to be fulfilled as President Trump is pushing ahead with plans to eliminate the Department of Education via executive order.
Trump has gone on record stating that the department is full of “radicals, zealots, and Marxists,” and for this reason, “control of education needs to shift to families rather than bureaucracies.”
“NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) scores reveal a national crisis — our children are falling behind,” Harrison Fields, the White House principal deputy press secretary, told Fox News.
“Over the past four years, Democrats have allowed millions of illegal minors into the country, straining school resources and diverting focus from American students.”
“Coupled with the rise of anti-American CRT and DEI indoctrination, this is harming our most vulnerable,” Fields added. “President Trump’s executive order to expand educational opportunities will empower parents, states, and communities to take control and improve outcomes for all students.”
Congress will need to sign off on eradicating the department, however, as stated in Article II of the U.S. Constitution.
In order to pass, the measure would need 60 votes to pass in the Senate, and there are only 53 Republicans in the chamber at present, so the probability of it passing is slim to none.
The desire to eliminate the agency within Congress is an entirely different matter, however, with Representatives such as Thomas Massie bringing forward legislation to dismantle the Department of Education by December 2026.
The possibility of abolishment of the agency came after the Senate confirmation of Linda McMahon, former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO, to lead the department.
Post confirmation, McMahon expressed her support for the administration’s plan, promising a “new era of accountability” as the agency nears its end.
“The reality of our education system is stark, and the American people have elected President Trump to make significant changes in Washington,” McMahon said in the March 3 memo.
“Our job is to respect the will of the American people and the President they elected, who has tasked us with accomplishing the elimination of bureaucratic bloat here at the Department of Education — a momentous final mission — quickly and responsibly.”
Unsurprisingly, the American Federation of Teachers quickly criticized the move, urging Congress to reject the executive order. The group pointed to a poll showing over 60% of Americans oppose dismantling the department, with union president Randi Weingarten arguing it undermines opportunities for all students.
Trump has also voiced supported in bringing education back to the states, as well as rethinking schools.
“I want every parent in America to be empowered to send their child to public, private, charter, or faith-based school of their choice,” Trump said.
“The time for universal school choice has come. As we return education to the states, I will use every power I have to give parents this right.”
