Bisexual Hollywood Actress to Play Jesus
Cynthia Erivo has been cast as Jesus in the Hollywood Bowl’s upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar, set to run from August 1-3, 2025.
The Emmy, Grammy and Tony winner, who is currently nominated for an Oscar for her role in Wicked, will take the lead in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s classical musical.

Erivo, who identifies as queer, is the first woman to lead a high-profile production of the rock opera, which tells the story of Jesus’s final days.
Previously, in an all-female album version of the production called Jesus Christ Superstar: She Is Risen in 2020, the actress also starred as Mary Magdalene. In that production, she performed the iconic number I Don’t Know How to Love Him.
Commenting on the matter, Father Calvin Robinson, quite possibly the most “cancelled” ministers of the gospel, posted on X saying, “The devil is agitated. He is losing his grip. America has found Christ again. America is praying again. Keep it up. Let the devil seethe. God will not be mocked.”
And he’s right!
The devil is agitated. He is losing his grip.

America has found Christ again. America is praying again.
Keep it up. Let the devil seethe.
God will not be mocked. https://t.co/Fj0wgJxu08
Robinson’s comment captures the tension many believers feel and have expressed over the sacredness of our Lord being interpreted in ways that are utterly distorted.
Zooming out from it all, the reality is that Erivo’s part in this production, yea, the production at large, is part of a greater cultural trend where sacred symbols are being co-opted for entertainment or ideological purposes.’
Perspective
Jesus Christ is the Son of God, embodying the full nature of humanity and divinity, and His masculinity is integral to the historical and theological significance of His life, death, and resurrection.
From a Christian perspective, it is important to engage with culture thoughtfully and critically, seeking to uphold the dignity of Christ and on this matter, we say post away, sharing the truth of God’s Son and why he came to this world! Utilize every opportunity to speak the truth, yes, use even this instance!
Whilst artistic freedoms are valuable and can be used to convey important messages to the culture (just think of how powerful The Passion of the Christ was) the entertainment industry isn’t going to get away with smearing our Savior.
As believers, may this serve as a reminder to stand firm in our faith and to obtain a Biblical understanding of Jesus’ true nature, refusing to allow cultural reinterpretations to obscure the foundational truths of the gospel.
