What You Didn't Know About Valentine's Day - Encounter Today - Blog

Now, this is a story you won’t see written in a Hallmark card!

On Valentine’s Day, we often think of red hearts, chocolates and love as the primary focuses but where did this special day originate?

It actually began with a priest named Valentinus who was imprisoned for converting people to Christianity, marrying Christian couples and seeking out Christians who were being persecuted under the Roman Empire in order that he might minister to them!

Yes, Valentine’s Day actually started thanks to a priest.

Due to the impact of this priest’s ministry and the message of Christ that he carried in the 3rd century, authorities demanded he renounce his faith or be beaten and beheaded; he chose to the latter.

While awaiting execution in prison, he prayed for his jailer’s blind daughter, and her sight was miraculously restored!

Before his death around AD 269, he left her a note signed, “Your Valentine.”

So “Valentine’s Day” is actually a day meant to commemorate the death and burial of a priest named Valentinus! Who would have thought!
