JD Vance Sheds Light on This Biblical Principle - Encounter Today - Blog

Did Vice President JD Vance just highlight a Biblical principle?

In an interview with Fox News on the Trump administration’s policy regarding illegal aliens and the invasion of America’s southern border, VP Vance discussed the importance of taking care of one’s own nation before helping other people. A concept not often seen today, let alone praised.

Vance is correct in stating that a government’s first obligation is to its own citizens and not the welfare of other nations. And whilst this may ruffle some feathers, it is Biblical.

For example, if your family is starving and you choose to feed others first, your priorities are revealed as being completely out of order. Expanding out from this personalized view of the principle, we see that it also applies to governments.

FACT: the greatest obligation we have is to those near us, and from this point, we go outwards, not the other way around.

In reaction to Vance’s statements, debates broke out across X on whether this was a wise move, some even asking the question if it was anti-Biblical.

Well, we can confirm, this principle is very much so in line with what is outlined in the Bible and it is known as ordo amoris (the order of love), and it is as follows:

1. Love God first, then neighbor (Mark 12:30-31).
2. Provide for your own household (1 Timothy 5:8).
3. Families should care for their own before the church does (1 Timothy 5:4).
4. Do good especially to the household of faith (Galatians 6:10).
5. If you don’t love your brother whom you can see, you don’t love God whom you cannot see (1 John 4:20).
6. The Pharisees are condemned because they prioritized mission but neglected true discipleship (Matthew 23:15).
7. Jesus condemned the Jewish Corban rule because it exalted false religiosity over filial piety (Mark 7:9-13).

Biblical love is ordered and this principle, for however much it applies to the family and the individual, also applies to an orderly government!

In addition to ordo amoris, is the Great Commission as seen in Acts 1 which is seen as:

1. Jerusalem (local)
2. Judea (region)
3. Samaria (neighboring regions)
4. All the earth

Some on the X platform have gone so far as to label these principles as “old school” as if that were something derogatory when in actuality, that’s something we desperately need in a society that has rejected absolute, time tested truth!

In conclusion, we thank God for leaders in our government who once again prioritize the American people above that of other nations!

Why do we rejoice over this?

For the simple fact that as the people of this nation once again increase and come out from under an oppressive system of governance, other nations will not only have a better system of government to refer to but they will also be blessed through the wealth of this nation!

For additional Biblical references, please see the following:

“But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” 1 Timothy 5:8

“So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:10

“For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises.” Romans 9:3-4
