Is it Biblical to “Invite Jesus into your heart”?
The human experience is marked by a constant search for meaning and transformation. Once we find something that works, we want to shout it from the rooftops. Whether we stumble upon a new spiritual understanding or a life-altering diet, the excitement of discovery can sometimes lead to a sense of superiority. Sadly, even within the Church, this tendency manifests in needless arguments over seemingly insignificant points.
Take, for instance, the phrase “Invite Jesus into your heart.” This seemingly innocuous expression has, in some circles, become a target of derision, dismissed as unbiblical by those who fancy themselves more enlightened.
“Inviting Jesus into your heart” is obviously a metaphorical expression, a simple way of conveying the profound need to yield our entire selves to Christ’s rule. It speaks to the transformative power of allowing Him to permeate every facet of our lives. Is there something unscriptural about this?
Many moons ago, when I heard someone say that this concept wasn’t found in the bible, I decided to look for myself. The evidence is pretty clear in Ephesians 3:17 where Paul talks about Christ dwelling “in your hearts through faith.” Romans 10:9 also connects salvation to believing in Jesus “in your heart.” I’ll place a few more scriptures below however we only need one to justify using this metaphor.
Perhaps, instead of engaging in pedantic debates, we should focus on the heart of the matter (pun intended).
The Christian life isn’t about winning arguments; it’s about a profound surrender to Christ. It’s about offering Him our very hearts, even in their wickedness, trusting that He will perform the ultimate miracle: transforming hearts of stone into hearts of flesh. Through this divine exchange we are born again and made new in Him.
As the new year unfolds, what more life-altering decision could we embrace than to open our hearts to Jesus? Confess to God that you are a sinner and in need of a heart transplant. Repent, place your faith in Him, and see what He can do with your life. He’s just waiting for you to welcome Him in.
As a new year unfolds, what decision could hold more promise than to open our hearts to Jesus, the Author of life? I challenge you to call out to Him, acknowledging your sinful nature and your desperate need for a heart transplant. King David prayed “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). Let us echo that prayer, repenting, placing our faith in the Great Physician, and watch as He breathes new life into our very souls. He waits patiently for you to simply open the door.
Happy New Year!
