Dems Want British Styled Government to Combat Trump - Encounter Today - Blog

Democrats: “Let’s do as the British do!” This is what America’s leftist party is suggesting in order to defeat President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda.

Calling for part of the UK’s Parliamentary system to be established here in the U.S. government in the form of a shadow cabinet is the Democrats latest tactic to combat Trump’s America First policies.

Representative Wiley Nickel (D-NC) recently published an op-ed in The Washington Post where he purposed the idea of a shadow cabinet which would serve as a mouth piece for Democrats to not only challenge the incoming administration but to share their “positive ideas.”

This sounds a lot like a continuation of the Kamala Harris campaign’s “good vibes” motto.

The funny thing is that Democrats had four years with their guy and gal in the White House plus an entire Presidential campaign to get their “positive ideas” across and the American people rejected them.

So much so too that Americans ran in the opposite direction, going so far as to give Republicans the White House, House of Representatives, the Senate and the popular vote.

Instead of taking accountability for their failures and taking a deeper look within, Democrats want to install a Parliamentary-like style of governance, who does this profit?

If this is the Democrats big idea of how to counter Trump’s agenda, then they are in worse shape than even I believed!

What Is A Shadow Cabinet?

For those unfamiliar with the concept of a shadow cabinet, it is a group of representatives from the opposition party that mirrors the ruling party’s cabinet members.

The shadow cabinet has a point person for every cabinet position to challenge their counterpart in the ruling Cabinet.

In his op-ed, Nickel says, “They [the shadow cabinet] watch the Cabinet closely, publicly challenging, scrutinizing and offering new ideas.”

“It’s democracy’s insurance policy. And it strengthens the government, too: There is no room for lazy ideas when rivals stand ready.”

What about the various safeguards for America’s republic already in place? Oops, I wasn’t supposed to point out that such protections exist, moving along…

Adding to the strangeness of this call to action is the rejection of America being a Republic with democratic systems and not a Democracy as the UK or Canada are. This means the governments not only look different but so do their functions.

But here we are, in 2024, with politicians and the media alike trying to degrade this republic into a democracy.

What Would It Look Like?

If this idea were to become a reality, it would require the U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate leader Chuck Schumer to appoint 26 Democratic members of Congress to go “one-on-one” with each member of Trump’s Cabinet.

This shadow cabinet would then flip if and when there was a Democrat administration.

“This is about putting a point person for advocacy groups, for the public, a lead messenger … we need to organize our opposition,” Nickel said. “We can do our own American version of a [shadow cabinet] that will help Democrats do the thing we didn’t do, which is get out our positive message and talk about the things that folks are rightly concerned about.”

My Thoughts

When I was living in Canada and working in Parliament, there were many things I liked about the system but there were even more that I grew to have frustration with.

Looking to the American system with its many checks and balances was extremely helpful and encouraging (shocking, I know, all this coming from a Canadian).

So when I heard this insane idea by Nickle just this morning, these were a few of my initial thoughts:

  1. Democrats keep trying to make it appear as though the American system is flawed and broken – it is not.
  2. As each and every representative is elected by the people and for the people, the American people should know what their elected representative has to say on all issues.

Their voice shouldn’t be taken away by someone in a shadow cabinet position who makes blanketed statements on behalf of all those in a party! Many in elected office who belong to a party differ from the opinions of the party, and that’s actually a good thing!

Why? Because it strengthens the voice they have in representing the interests of their region and ensures there’s a robust debate that takes place on policy!

3. If parties need a new platform to enhance their messaging as the Democrats so obviously do, they should try making an app or firing their policy wonks and finding new people. Changing how a good system is run to try and justify your own folly is not the way.

Conclusion

All in all, I say this as someone who not only lived under a Parliamentary system but worked in one: Canada and the UK with their Parliamentary systems have many flaws, so it is mind boggling that the U.S. would ever want to do a copy & paste of that system when theirs is by far the superior!

America’s republic has been a model of good governance and has helped shape her into the “city on a hill” that has made her the envy of the world.

Trying to change America to fit a model created for another nation which sits under a different system is the equivalent to rejecting the blessing that is the form and function of America’s system which was inspired based upon Biblical principles.
