Why Religious Freedom Matters

The topic of religious freedom isn’t one that we in the West commonly fixates on as we often think of it as a freedom that is mostly under attack overseas.

A major element of the American order has been our ability to seek the truth about God and live according to our beliefs.

No other nation on earth has such extensive and comprehensive protections of religious freedoms as we do, but do we appreciate them as much as we should?

James Madison described it as an “unalienable right,” whilst the Declaration of Independence recognizes these rights as “endowed by [our] Creator.”

As time goes on, however, the target on this freedom in the West continues to increase both from a cultural standpoint, as well as from within the political sphere.

Government actions and policies continue to encroach on religious freedom with many policies forcing faithful Americans to violate their core beliefs on important issues like life, human sexuality, and marriage.

As such, it is important for us to revisit the question, “why does religious freedom matter?”

What Is Religious Freedom?

Religious freedom, or freedom of belief, is a universally protected human right which means, regardless of what country one lives in, the State has no authority over an individual’s religion or set of beliefs.

This freedom protects the individual’s right to live, speak, and act according to their beliefs peacefully and publicly, this extends to their ability to live according to their beliefs at work, at school, etc.

Religious freedom goes well beyond the “freedom to worship” or freely assemble as it ensures that no person has to renounce or reject their deeply held convictions in order to come into conformity to that which the government or culture demands.

Why Religious Freedom Matters

• It is a pre-political right that belongs to every person. This is a right that is inalienable, as well as fundamental
• It protects every human person regardless of their religious persuasion or a lack thereof whether that be in the workplace or in their community.
• Religious freedom recognizes and preserves the dignity of every human person!
• It builds up communities as religious freedom protects organizations, charities and businesses, as well as individuals!

Who Benefits From Religious Freedom?

Every person benefits from intact and well protected religious freedoms.

From Christians to Jews to Buddhists to Muslims and atheists, religious freedom preserves a society from fear of government persecution.

As we reflect on the privileges afforded to us in the West, it’s crucial to acknowledge that these freedoms require vigilant protection and active engagement as encroachments on religious liberty remind us that complacency can lead to a gradual erosion of our rights.
