Italy Bans Surrogacy Abroad, Safeguarding Family Values! - Encounter Today - Blog

Children can no longer be bought by Italian citizens abroad as surrogacy is now a crime.

The consequences? Imprisonment of up to two years and a fine of up to one million euros.

This pro-family law, although being painted as discriminatory by those in the media who say gay couples will no longer be able to obtain a child, protects the natural family and maternal bonds. It also ensures children aren’t commercially separated from their biological mother.

Domestically, surrogacy was already illegal, however, this amendment to the law classifies surrogacy abroad as a rare universal crime that transcends borders.

The amended law passed the Senate by a vote of 84 to 58.

Senator Susanna Campione stated, “It is nature that decides this, not us.”

“We wish for this example to be followed [by other countries] … this is a civilized law that safeguards the child but also the woman, since we believe that surrogacy essentially reduces a woman to a reproductive machine.”

In addition to Italy’s law, there has been a global movement to ban surrogacy completely.

Back in 2023, experts came together in an international convention from 70 countries calling for a universal surrogacy ban.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, the European Parliament amended the “Directive on human trafficking to include surrogate motherhood among the acts of human trafficking.”

Just as with Italy’s vote, there was a significant majority who voted in favor of the addition with 563 voting in favor and only 7 opposed.

“I think the goal of Giorgia Meloni would be to push … for an international convention abolishing surrogacy,” said Léopold Vanbellingen, director of the European Institute of Bioethics.

“At this moment it’s clearly unrealistic, but during a Trump administration the answer might be different.”

Conclusion

Surrogacy is often promoted as a means of obtaining children for couples who cannot, or don’t want to, have children. Thankfully, this is now being classified as human trafficking.

It is heartbreaking when couples cannot have children. Surrogacy, however, is not a solution to this issue.

Purchasing children and taking them away from their birth mothers isn’t just unnatural, it is cruel.

In a materialistic society where everything from things to people are seemingly disposable, this move by Italy is a great step forward to restoring dignity to each and every human being whilst protecting children and their mothers.
