SHOCKING- Episcopalian Reverend Says Jesus Is A Bad Example - Encounter Today - Blog

“Oh, that’s not quite the example of Jesus I want,” said Reverend Elizabeth Riley who serves as the interim rector at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church.

During a recent sermon, Riley claimed that Jesus’ treatment of the Syrophenician woman isn’t just a bad look for him but a bad example for his followers.

“There are countless examples, and this is just one of them, where I see someone wearing the name of Christianity and I cringe because it does not look like the Christianity I want to be associated with. There are examples all of us have in our own lives. What’s worse is when you get to actual stories in scripture that make you go, ‘oh, that’s not quite the example of Jesus I want.’ And this is one of them.”

“Jesus and the Syrophenician woman. And I name this because we often aren’t given permission to say ‘I don’t like that thing in scripture’ because it is such a sacred text, but it’s a text that can handle some wrestling. It has withstood centuries. So we can argue with it a little bit. Jesus’s treatment of the Syrophenician woman is the last example of Christianity that I want.”

She continued:
“She is desperate, her daughter is suffering, and comes to Jesus begging for help, and he basically says that she’s less than a dog. I mean, it is not a good look on Jesus. And I hate that it is supposed to be upheld as a scriptural example for us. Because that’s not the Jesus I pray to. That is not the Jesus I know.
We’ve also tried to encapsulate Jesus into this one unmovable, unchangeable thing. But Jesus didn’t come just as full God walking around amongst us. Jesus came to be fully human. So I look to this scripture, not for Jesus’s divinity, but for his humanity.”

We don’t say this lightly; these statements are the epitome of heresy, utterly contradicting Scripture.

In another sermon delivered by Riley, she states how humanity has been “unpredictable for God” and that “we are surprising and confounding beings and God is constantly changing and evolving alongside with us.”

We don’t know who Ms. Riley serves, but it is not Jesus Christ because we know that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever,” according to Hebrews 13:8.

Perspective

It is a dangerous thing indeed to stand in the pulpit, professing to be a representative of Christ, and speak against God’s Word and His son!

The Word of God clearly states in Galatians 2:20, “My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

So those things we were once comfortable with in our sin are then seen through the lens of God’s Word which becomes the believer’s foundation.

Christ isn’t to conform to our standards, we are to be conformed to his! This happens by way of the Holy Spirit.

Ezekiel 31:26-27 also says, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.”

Our old self rejected Christ but in our acceptance of Christ, we are given a new heart and spirit – both of which “move” us to “follow” God’s decrees and laws.

This rebirth also changes the way we speak and act for “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks” as is found in Matthew 12:34 and speaking against Scripture isn’t the way of the believer.

Conclusion

Is Riley representative of all Episcopal ministers? No.

Is she representative of many who call themselves Episcopalian “preachers?” Yes. She is also another example of those God spoke of who would fall away in these last days.

“The time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” 2 Timothy 4:3-4

Instead of trying to fit Jesus into a person’s woke ideology which seeks to make him more “appealing” to those lost in this world, we are called to not be conformed to the patterns of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds!

In these last days, there will be many who profess Christ but want nothing to do with Him, many others will also come who speak against God’s Word.

As the remnant who are called to be the preservation within society, we will not have anything to do with such teaching, but rather, we will be bold in proclaiming the truth of God’s Word to those who are being led astray by false doctrine.

On the Episcopal priest’s dislike of Jesus’ attitude with the Syrophenician woman … She didn’t say Jesus was a bad example, only in this case where one wonders why Jesus did what he did. It’s one thing to criticize, but quite another to explain to readers of this post what does the scripture mean? Does anyone know? I think we have all been shocked at this passage…
