5 Powerful Ways to Pray for America
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chron. 7:14
Trials and triumphs have marked America, making her into the resilient nation which has been referred to since her infancy as a “city on a hill” by John Winthrop in his sermon called “A Model of Christian Charity” which he delivered whilst aboard the Arbella.
Our “city on a hill,” however, has been under attack and it is up to us as believers to stand in the gap by taking action in the political realm as well as through interceding for the nation through prayer.
Nothing is new under the sun and this nation is facing attacks by our true enemy because we have been leaders in funding and promoting the Gospel around the world.
Although we face many challenges, the power of faith and the promise of restoration found in God’s Word is indeed attainable if we follow what 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
As we navigate the complexities of our times, let us turn our hearts towards the Lord, seeking His guidance and grace in prayer for this great nation of America.
Here are five powerful ways that we can pray for these United States of America:
Prayer for National Leadership: “Father, we lift up our national leaders to you in the name of Jesus. We pray that they would seek your wisdom in every decision they make, leading our nation in righteousness and justice. May they be guided by your Spirit and work for the good of all citizens understanding that they are placed in positions of authority to serve and not be served. We ask that our leaders would be surrounded by those who honor you and are led by your Holy Spirit and that their influence would impact the decisions of those who do and do not know you. Expose and remove wrong people around these leaders that have agendas that do not align with your will for this nation. May all their demonic-inspired counsel be exposed and destroyed, in Jesus’ name. You say in your Word that whatever we bind on earth will be bound in heaven and so we bind those wicked deeds of darkness that seek to work against your Kingdom and we say that they must bow, in Jesus’ name. We thank you for the protection of our leaders and for their families. May the hearts of our leadership be drawn towards the things of God and soft towards your holy people, making even those whose hearts who reject you, to push for policies which make it easier for the Gospel to be spread at home and abroad. Thank you, God, for leading us in the way that we should go as a nation. In the mighty name of Jesus, amen.”
Scripture: “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” 1 Timothy 2:1-2
Prayer for Unity in the Body of Christ: “Lord, we ask for unity to sweep across our nation. Help us as the Body of Christ to come together to stand for righteousness in this nation. We know that where there is unity, there your blessing resides. So in the Name that is above every other Name, we say let your people arise together as one body who understands that our citizenship is in heaven, and that as we reside here on earth we would walk in love with one another and take territory here in America, for we were born for such a time as this. Today, we stand at a crossroads, Lord—a time when division and discord threaten to undermine the very fabric of our nation but we remember that which you have spoken; that IF we humble ourselves and pray, turning from our wicked ways you WILL hear from heaven and bring restoration to this land. So we come before you and stand as your children by faith doing that which you have said, petitioning you to heal our great land starting with bridging the gaps in this Body.”
Scripture: “Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all.” Ephesians 4:1-6
Proverbs 133:1-3
2 Corinthians 13:11
Matthew 18:18
Prayer for Spiritual Awakening: “Father, we pray for a mighty spiritual awakening in America. Ignite a fire in the hearts of your people that they would seek you again. Let revival sweep through our communities, bringing hope and transformation to the hearts of those in our communities (pray for specific people in your community) that their entire households would serve you. May prodigals come home and lost souls have an undeniable thirst for you. Father, embolden us to carry out the great commission – to go and make disciples here in our own nation. May the hunger for you increase even in the hearts of your people. May there be those with platforms who many have written off, turn their hearts towards you, mouthpieces once used against you, now turned into trumpets proclaiming your glory. Shake everything that must be shaken, Lord. Above all else, may your will be done in this nation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Prayer for Prosperity and Blessing: “Lord, we declare Your blessings over America and we bring to your remembrance how this nation, filled with your people, have been a nation that has funded, promoted and spread the Gospel across the globe. May our economy thrive and every citizen find opportunity and success. Help us to be good stewards of the resources you have provided, using them to bless others and advance Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Scripture: “Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” Jeremiah 29:7
Prayer for Divine Protection: “Heavenly Father, we plead for Your divine protection over our nation. Shield us from harm, both seen and unseen. Surround America with your angels and keep our land safe from any threats that may arise from inside or outside our borders. May any enemy of this nation fall and their plans be thwarted for the sake of the Gospel. We know that we can “draw near to your throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” and Lord, we are in need of your protection and guidance and mercy. May those who seek to exploit our nation in any way be thrown into confusion, may their plans turn on themselves and cease to find any success. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Scripture: “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.” 1 John 5:14-15
