Brazil Suspends “X”

Brazil Suspends X - Encounter Today - Blog

What’s Happening?

Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Brazilian Supreme Court has ordered the “immediate, complete and total suspension of X’s operations” in the country.

The decision also imposes a daily fine of R$50,000 (nearly $9,000) on private individuals and companies that attempt to continue using X via virtual private networks.

If the Justice’s name sounds familiar that might be because he is the very same Justice who issued an order to freeze the assets of another company owned by Elon Musk, Starlink. This order came after X refused to comply with the censorship orders given by the Supreme Court.

Alliance Defending Freedom International (ADF) has called upon the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to urgently intervene in this matter in order to protect the God-given right of free speech.

Brazilians have a right to speak freely about the issues affecting them. The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the suspension of “X” in Brazil is as expected, yet it is a chilling and dystopian reminder all nations, including the United States, should pay close attention to.

America, Pay Attention

This story hits close to home even more so after CNN’s Jake Tapper interviewed Kamala Harris and it was exposed how she believes Elon Musk “has lost his privileges.” Harris’ statement was so radical that it caused a visible reaction of concern to wash over Tapper’s face.

It is dangerously naive for Americans to believe this kind of censorship is solely reserved for and isolated to other countries.

Democrats here at home have been pushing to “regulate social media platforms” (aka censor speech) for years.

Lest we forget, just a few days prior to President Biden’s announcing his “Disinformation Governance Board,” former President Obama stated that the United States’ democracy depended on censorship!

Obama went on to propose weakening the protections Americans have in the First Amendment of the Constitution!

Interestingly, one of the bulwarks of the establishment media, the New York Times, came out this week with yet another anti-America article entitled: “The Constitution is Sacred. Is It Also Dangerous?”

What is becoming more evident by the day is how the global system in place feels threatened by X, it’s owner and its users as they are actively poking at the cracks in the foundation and this is, in part, why we are now seeing such articles being written by the likes of the New York Times, policies being proposed as the one Obama presented and targets being placed on so many who are taking credible steps towards the furtherance of freedom.

Totalitarianism Creeping Forward

This move by the Brazilian Supreme Court is a step in the wrong direction as it is a step towards totalitarianism.

Brazil has joined China, Iran and North Korea in banning X which is telling of the direction the nation is heading in.

Shockingly, no one from the Biden Administration has come out to formally stand in opposition to the censorship, in fact, they have been an integral part in censoring Brazilian’s rights and freedoms!

According to Michael Shellenberger:

“…the Biden administration and Democrats have played an influential role in instigating censorship in Brazil.

The FBI went to Brazil and gave its Supreme Court justices advice on how to censor its population. The US government has been funding many of the NGOs in Brazil that have demanded censorship since the election of a populist president there in 2018. And when I testified before Congress in May of this year, the Democrats on the committee and their witness defended Brazil’s censorship.”

Shellenberger continued, “After the election of populist president Jair Bolsonaro in 2018, the US government funded pro-censorship organizations that demanded censorship.

Moraes yesterday openly defended censorship to prevent “extremist populist groups” from coming to power. As United States Federal Communications Commissioner Brendan Carr noted yesterday, that’s a direct violation of the Brazilian constitution, which explicitly protects political speech.”

And this is why the United States under the Biden Administration informing Brazil on how to censor their people is even more sinister than you could have believed:

Shellenberger states how, “…the totalitarian takeover of Brazil is a model for what the Democrats and the legacy news media want for the whole world.

Pro-censorship scholars at Stanford and Harvard, Democrats in Congress, and the US news media have long recognized that the First Amendment is an obstacle to their plans.

And so they have supported censorship efforts by nations with weaker free speech protections, like Brazil, Britain, Australia, and the European Union, to censor and even block X.”

Who Holds the Power?

It is up to the people of Brazil to reverse course whilst it is up to Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco to impeach Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

Thus far, 146 deputies have signed an impeachment request for Moraes.

Thankfully, several Brazilian politicians including Senator Eduardo Girão, Congressman Marcel Van Hattam, and Vice Governor of Minas Gerais, Mateus Simões are continuing to post on X in defiance of the ban.

“I never imagined myself practicing and propagating civil disobedience,” said Simões, “but censorship cannot be tolerated, ever.”
