Ending the Filibuster? Democrats’ Radical Agenda

If Democrats win the White House, Senate, and House in November, they’ll try to alter the Supreme Court’s composition, codify Roe v. Wade, and potentially make Puerto Rico and Washington, DC, into states to gain more electoral votes and senators.

How might this happen? By ending the filibuster as Senator Chuck Schumer suggested this week at the Democratic National Convention.

Schumer suggested he would seek to end the filibuster in order to pass legislation on abortion and elections, but would the push for radical legislation end with these two issues? Doubtful.

Ending the filibuster would be a major shift in American governance.

What is the filibuster, you may ask?

The filibuster is a procedural tactic used in the U.S. Senate to extend debate on a bill or nomination which effectively delays or blocks a vote. To overcome a filibuster and proceed to a vote, a supermajority of 60 senators (out of 100) must vote to end the debate, a process known as “cloture.”

Originally designed to ensure extensive debate and prevent hasty decisions, the filibuster has been used both to stall legislation and to influence the content of bills.

However, in the case of Schumer seeking to push through legislation on abortion and elections, if the 60-vote threshold were breached, it’s likely that other radical pieces of legislation, like Medicare for All or the Green New Deal, could follow.

A filibuster-free Senate would mean Democrats could push through a range of their priorities, including comprehensive immigration reform, national gun control, and a revival of President Biden’s halted measures, like student debt relief.

The filibuster has been a staple of the U.S. Senate since its inception.

It has helped in making the passage of vast and sweeping legislation challenging without increased debate, significant reflection and broad support.

Despite its historical role, leftists have increasingly criticized it despite using it frequently when President Trump was in office.

With many issues politicians raise, we hear about them and dismiss them, this shouldn’t be the case with ridding our Senate of the filibuster.

It’s not a glamorous subject but it is an extremely important one!

This isn’t the first time Democrats have sought to end the filibuster either.

In 2022, Senate Democrats attempted to dismantle it for the sake of “voting rights.” They failed.

If this plan to end a vital part of the Senate’s role comes into fruition, other institutions would ultimately face reconstruction as well.
