Church of England Ditches ‘Church’

Church of England Ditches 'Church' - Encounter Today - Blog

The Church of England (CoE) has announced it will no longer use the term “church” to describe its places of worship instead opting for “community centers” or “gathering places.”

This decision is part of a broader rebranding effort that also includes discontinuing the use of the term “Bible study” in favor of more contemporary and inclusive language in order to foster community engagement rather than traditional worship.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, explained in a statement that the decision reflects a desire to make the Church’s language more accessible and relevant to modern audiences.

“As we move forward in a rapidly changing world, it is essential that our language evolves to meet the needs and expectations of our diverse communities,” Welby said.

“The term ‘church’ carries connotations that some may find outdated or exclusionary. By adopting more inclusive terms, we hope to foster a greater sense of belonging and connection.”

Additionally, the Church will move away from the term “Bible study,” opting instead for “faith exploration groups” or “spiritual discussion forums.”

In order to see the fullness of this new agenda come into fruition, a series of workshops and discussion forums to help parishioners and clergy adapt to the new terms and understand the rationale behind the changes are being set up.

Perspective

Why we would base our decisions upon what is or isn’t currently “inclusive” is a terrible marker. If we were to go along with the logic the Church of England has put on display, we might as well abandon much of the Bible seeing as it is inexplicably exclusionary!

Exhibit A. Jesus said in John 14:6; “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” This is an exclusionary statement.

The transition to the new terminology will begin immediately, with updated language being implemented across all Church of England communications and materials.

Exhibit B. Jesus said in Matthew 16:18; “Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.” The church belongs to Jesus and if He used the exclusive word of “church” then who are we to try and redefine it so it fits a mold created by a secular culture?

Some may think this extreme but so be it. If the CofE thinks it can become more “inclusive” and “modern” then it might as well throw itself into the bin of history for they have forgotten what Jesus tells us in Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Again, Christianity is exclusionary and there is a different pattern we are to follow but the CofE doesn’t appear to have this revelation.

Conclusion

Just because the ‘Church of England’ is lost doesn’t mean the body of Christ, which is the true church, is lost!

We recently covered revivals breaking out in the UK and all across Europe and these stories aren’t a part of some small movement but of God pouring out His spirit which is transforming lives.

It is our responsibility to live lives which honor God. It is our responsibility to be uncompromising in our faith. It is our responsibility to go and make disciples of all nations. As time moves closer to the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, many will fall away as we are witnessing but that won’t be us. We will remain faithful and steadfast so that we may hear “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

“We do not want a church that will move with the world. We want a church that will move the world.” GK Chesterton
