OpenAI Hires Former NSA Spy Chief

OpenAI has appointed Paul M. Nakasone, a retired US Army general and formerly the head of the National Security Agency (NSA), to its board of directors.

Nakasone, who led the NSA from 2018 to 2023, will be joining OpenAI’s Safety and Security Committee.

According to OpenAI, he will be working to improve AI’s role in cybersecurity by detecting and responding to threats quickly.

Former NSA contractor who exposed the dark underbelly of America’s intelligence agencies, Edward Snowden, took to X saying:

“They’ve gone full mask-off: trust @OpenAI or its products (ChatGPT etc). There is only one reason for appointing an @NSAGov Director to your board. This is a willful, calculated betrayal of the rights of every person on Earth. You have been warned.”

Is it any coincidence then that Apple recently announced it would be integrating OpenAI into its operating systems as well?

Elon Musk came out sarcastically stating that he, “Can’t wait for OpenAI to have access to my phone …” and how he’d “rather not have a phone than allow OpenAI to have access to my phone.”

Sean Davis, CEO and co-founder of The Federalist, posted:

“In case you needed more proof that AI is just another corrupt intelligence community op, OpenAI just brought the former NSA director on board. AI will be weaponized to spy on you, manipulate you, and eventually to cancel you.”

The potential for significant entanglement in terms of conflict of interest between the intelligence community and AI companies like OpenAI is cause for grave concern.

An important point to take note of is how, at present, OpenAI has 35 in-house lobbyists and is aiming to have up to 50 by the end of the year.

Why does this matter?

Because, there is a basic understanding in Washington DC and it is this, politicians aren’t the movers and shakers, the majority of them are merely puppets of lobbyists.

Lobbyists write the legislation that congress puts forward as bills and they do this so Congress can focus on fundraising.

This hiring move by OpenAI alongside their bulking up of lobbying might is giving all the classical signs of an industry fit for the government’s use and dare we say, abuse.
