Google Interferes in U.S. Elections - Encounter Today - Blog

Thousands of pages of leaked documents from Google’s Search Division exposed that the company takes part in whitelists for searches related to elections.

This revelation came thanks to SEO expert Rand Fishkin as seen in his report in SparkToro.

Proof was provided that there were indeed manipulations to what people could search. This comes after years of Google denying putting in such a function.

The source of the leaks, Erfan Azimi, hopes his efforts in exposing the debacle will lead to Google being held accountable for their actions whilst increasing transparency.

Such functions include: a “NavBoost” system for ranking quality, click-centric user signals, as well as whitelists for Covid-19 and searches concerning elections.

Various sites are labelled by Google using “flags” which rank how they appear when someone is searching for a specific topic.

“ElectionAuthority” is one such flag.

Big tech has often been, and is increasingly, accused and proven to be influencing America’s elections. This isn’t anything new. What is new, is just how much they’re getting caught.

This level of whitewashing and labelling of searches is fascinating, seeing as one side of the aisle appears to be more in favor of accountability whilst the other is more so on the side of big tech censors who wouldn’t be able to get away with suppressing information if there were additional measures of accountability in place.

88 percent of political donations by Google employees made their way to the Democratic Party, as reported in 2020 by a CNBC report.

The bias of individuals at Google seems to have made its way into the very fabric of company policy.

Whilst the whole picture hasn’t yet revealed concerning Google’s whitelisting shenanigans, there are those keeping a watchful eye out for the company’s continued actions as some critics believe they may violate campaign finance law.

As the Federal Election Committee explains, they must be made aware of such contributions:

“an in-kind contribution is a non-monetary contribution. Goods or services offered free or at a less than the usual charge result in an in-kind contribution.”

Whitelists aren’t something that Google just decided to start to entertain.

Conservative watchdog group Media Research Center released a report on which alleges that, for 16 years, Google has been engaged in election interference.

Over those 16 years, there has been a total of 41 known instances where their direct interference benefitted the Democratic Party.

The report says Google, “utilized its power to help push to electoral victory the most liberal candidates, regardless of party, while targeting their opponents for censorship.”

Meanwhile, back in 2022, the tech giant ushered in another whitelist that would keep political candidates’ campaign emails out of receivers spam folders!

A study conducted on this situation found that the email spam filtering by gmail (which is owned by Google) was obviously biased.

There are no indicators that there are any sort of FEC or Department of Justice investigations into potential violations by Google for in-kind contributions.
