Elon Musk VS Brazil Totalitarianism - Encounter Today - Blog

Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has announced a criminal investigation into Elon Musk, the owner of X, for allegedly spreading disinformation, obstructing justice, and allowing people who De Moraes had banned from social media to freely express their views.

Alexadre de Moraes says X would face $20,000 per day fines for every banned person Musk allows to continue to speak!

After the country’s latest bizarre election took place, it was clear to see – the fix was in for Musk’s X.

Brazil’s new President is nothing short of a radical and the man who has seemingly become the de facto dictator is Alexandre de Moraes who has taken Brazil one step closer to being a dictatorship.

At present, Musk’s defiance to censor people’s speech on his platform is standing in the way of the Brazilian government’s plot to strip away free speech.

X isn’t the only social media company to face intense pressures from governments. After years of pressure from activist NGOs, the Democrat Party and corporate advertisers, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg abandoned his principled free speech position in 2020.

Just last month, the U.S. Supreme Court held a hearing where Justices said it was perfectly okay for the U.S. government pressuring social media companies to censor.

Last week, the Scottish government implemented a law to crack down on so-called hate speech.

In Ireland, the government wants the power to send police into people’s homes to search computers and phones for hate speech.

In Canada, the governing Liberal party wants the power to send people to prison for life for things they’ve said. And the European Union has empowered a tiny group of bureaucrats to decide what is true and false and engage in mass censorship.

According to best selling author, Michael Schellenberger, this series of events is no coincidence:

“All of this is happening at the very same moment that my colleagues and I have revealed that government intelligence organizations are working through NGOs to interfere in elections by spreading disinformation about populist activists and political candidates. In other words, governments are demanding censorship in order to protect their ability to spread disinformation.”

Shellenberger also stated:

“Making matters worse, governments are directly financing corporate news media. The current Brazilian government is spending 30 times more than the previous government on media advertising in order to spread its disinformation.”

This is totalitarianism.

Government and corporate media’s demands for increased censorship, persecution, and incarceration is to crush their political enemies and competition.

After Musk bought Twitter, the Biden administration lost their minds, going so far as to attack him and his companies from every avenue possible. Why? Because they had just lost a major propaganda tool and now the Brazilian government is doing the same thing.

The collective freak out session by the U.S. government all made sense when the Twitter Files were released which exposed how the FBI orchestrated a disinformation and censorship campaign in order to protect Joe Biden via Twitter.

Under the guise of “cyber security,” a campaign of censorship and disinformation came to be under what became known as the Cyber Threat Intelligence League, which consisted of the U.S. Department of Defense and the British Ministry of Defense.

Next up, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Stanford Internet Observatory initiated a censorship effort around the 2020 elections and the global “pandemic.”

Social media is an incredibly effective tool and governments and their intelligence agencies know it, that’s why they’ve been working globally to control them, and if they can’t do that, intimidate, smear and drive them into the ground because if they can’t control the flow of information, no one can.

Big Tech Government Reliance

So why do big tech companies give into governments demanding they censor certain types of speech? Because, they are reliant on the government to protect them on multiple fronts from ensuring data logs in countries work in their favor to making sure advertising laws benefit them and the list of reasons why could go on and on.

It will be very interesting if the U.S. government launches an investigation into communications with the Brazilian government to find if there were communications to see if there was any talk between the U.S. government and individuals and/or groups to establish a pipeline between Bolsanaro (President of Brazil at the time) and Trumpism in order to drive down any support (or appearance of support) abroad. This is definitely something we will be keeping an eye on!

Supreme Court Justice Alexadre de Moraes

Elon Musk has been included in an investigation by Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexadre de Moraes over the dissemination of fake news on X. de Moraes has opened a secondary investigation into Musk for his alleged obstruction.

Musk accused de Moraes of suppressing free speech and violation Brazil’s constitution, noting that X users could bypass any social media shutdowns by using VPNs.

After Musk said his company would cease to comply with the court’s orders to block specific accounts, Justice Alexandre de Moraes says Musk started waging a public “disinformation campaign” regarding the court’s actions.

The text of the Justice’s decisions revealed that Musk will be investigated for alleged intentional criminal “instrumentalisation” of X as part of an investigation into a network of people known as digital militias.

These “digital militias”allegedly spread defamatory fake news and threats against Supreme Court justices.

De Moraes says the investigation will look at whether Musk has engaged in obstruction, criminal organization and incitement, saying:

“The flagrant conduct of obstruction of Brazilian justice, incitement of crime, the public threat of disobedience of court orders and future lack of cooperation from the platform are facts that disrespect the sovereignty of Brazil.”

De Moraes – A Corrupt Justice?

For years de Moraes has cracked down on free speech and engaged in political persecution.

Former President Jair Bolsonaro’s inner circle has faced imprisonment thanks to de Moraes within the digital militias investigation, while raids of Bolsonaro supporters’ homes with the former President being the target of a 2021 investigation.

This is the weaponization of a judicial system.

In 2022, de Moraes ordered Telegram, a popular messaging app, be shutdown because, according to the justice, it ignored requests from Brazilian authorities to provide information on certain individuals, as well as refusing to block specific profiles.

Based upon this alone, de Moraes is clearly no friend of freedom.

Once Telegram complied with de Moraes’ requests, it was allowed to continue operating within the country!

“But principles matter more than profit,” Musk wrote in his announcement that X would be removing all restrictions on blocked accounts.

“These are the most draconian demands of any country on Earth!” Musk said.

As of Monday, blocked accounts had not been reinstated which has led to speculation that X hasn’t followed through on Musk’s previous statements. If Musk reactivates the accounts, X would face a $20-25,000 fine for each day they were reinstated.

Brazil’s former President Bolsonaro said, “Our freedom today is largely in his hands … The action he’s taking, what he’s been saying and he hasn’t been intimidated and has said that he’s going to put forward this idea of fighting for freedom for our country. That’s good.”

Even the New York Times has noted just how controversial the Brazilian Supreme Court Justice is:

“He has jailed people without trial for posting threats on social media; helped sentence a sitting congressman to nearly nine years in prison for threatening the court; ordered raids on businessmen with little evidence of wrongdoing; suspended an elected governor from his job; and unilaterally blocked dozens of accounts and thousands of posts on social media, with virtually no transparency or room for appeal.”

“We cannot disrespect democracy in order to protect it,” said Irapuã Santana, a lawyer and legal columnist for O Globo, one of Brazil’s biggest newspapers. “Today he’s doing it against our enemy. Tomorrow he’s doing it against our friend — or against us. It’s a dangerous precedent.”

Conclusion

Either governments are protecting free speech or actively participating in a war against it as we are currently witnessing.

We know that “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” Proverbs 29:2
