Are the Feds Fueling Human Trafficking - Encounter Today - Blog

FLORIDA: A massive human trafficking sting has resulted in 228 arrests according to Polk County’s Sheriff Grady Judd.

Those arrested in the operation called “Operation March Sadness 2024” included members of the U.S. military, medical professionals, coaches, a teacher, authorities stated. Sheriff Judd announced that 150 suspects, or johns, were arrested along with 66 prostitutes and 12 others.

“Federal Policy Drives Illegal Immigrant Crime and Victimization,” read a sign held up by Sheriff Judd which showed the darkened silhouettes of the survivors of trafficking to conceal their identity alongside emblems of federal agencies during a press conference.

A shocking element to this story is when Sheriff Judd spoke of the federal government’s part in the human trafficking operation and not in a way anyone would have anticipated.

Judd spoke of three survivors of sex trafficking who were able to operate freely within the United States thanks to travel vouchers given to them by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Of this, Judd said, “I’m sure the federal government will verify that this is not true, but you decide who you want to believe. Whether you want to believe these victims of human trafficking or, the whitewash, the federal authorities.”

Each of the women provided the same details to authorities: when they entered the United States illegally, they were given a form by DHS, including ID and paperwork, which allows them to fly to any major metropolitan area in the United States, for free (which means, on tax-payers dime).

These women, originally from Venezuela, have practically become indentured to their trafficker who is suspected of being a woman. The survivors told authorities they traveled from place to place making money to pay off their debts which incurred when they found a means of entry into the country.

The sting operation also helped authorities identify at least 13 potential human trafficking victims. Judd noted that within one year of performing these types of operations, 58 human trafficking victims have been identified.

Judd confirmed three men connected to the U.S. Air Force were arrested in the sting; a staff sergeant, an airman police officer and a 19-year-old about to start his Air Force training.

A math and science teacher at New Beginnings High School in Auburndale was also arrested. “He came to have sex. He called it a quick visit for $60,” Judd reported. “Well, since he’s able to teach math, he can figure out that it didn’t add up this time.”

A former detention deputy with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office was also arrested. Judd asked the former deputy, “Dude, what are you doing? You went from being a stellar employee to committing moral crimes, and it’s two in a month.” The man replied, “I got a problem.” “No kidding. You’ve got a big problem,” said Judd.

“This is a new record number of arrests during an investigation of this kind,” Judd stated, adding that social services organizations will help the female victims involved.

Perspective

Several individuals, from all different walks of life, were caught in this sting operation. Not any one is the same as the other but the common thread between them all is the sin that binds and breaks.

Is the crisis at the border victimizing vulnerable people? Yes

Are our government agencies helping facilitate the victimization of people? Yes

But the one very uncomfortable element we have to acknowledge is how the average Joe is committing these crimes, from the school teacher to military members. But how can this be possible? Because, people from every walk of life have committed sin and are in need of a Savior.

A Savior who can redeem, restore, and transform their lives.

The one, true Savior is Jesus Christ, and every single one of the individuals involved, from the survivors to the perpetrators, needs him to find freedom.
