Greece Legalizes Same-Sex “Marriage,” Adoption
Greece became the first Orthodox Christian country to legalize same-sex unions, as well as for such couples to adopt children.
In a shocking departure from the country’s religious roots, Greece’s Parliament has approved a piece of devastating legislation to legalize same-sex unions, as well as for such couples to adopt children.
In 2015, Greece legalized same-sex unions but at the time, gay couples were still unable to adopt children. This new law changes that limitation which serves as a protective measure for children.
The bill passed the legislature with 176 voting in favor and a mere 76 voting in opposition with two legislators abstaining from the vote, and 46 who didn’t present in the house.
Polls show that around 62% of respondents are in favor of same-sex unions being deemed as “marriage,” with 36% in opposition. Only 30% of respondents are in favor of adoption by same-sex couples, with 69% opposed.
Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the bill was “a milestone for human rights, reflecting today’s Greece – a progressive, and democratic country, passionately committed to European values.” Just a few days into his second term, Mitsotakis pledged his support for legal same-sex “marriage” and was responsible for crafting the bill which also opens the door for children to be adopted by gay couples and grants these couples legal, guardian status. The bill does not, however, permit gay couples to utilize surrogacy to “create” a baby.
“The Greek Prime Minister hailed the vote as ‘a milestone for human rights,’ but the fact is Greek law already recognized civil partnerships for gay couples. Once again, we see that the issue was never really about ‘equal rights’; same-sex ‘marriage’ has always been about undoing the immutable definition of marriage, leading to the unraveling of Western society,” said Doug Mainwaring who is a marriage and children’s rights activist.
“Tragically, the new law places adult demands for ‘equal rights’ over the fundamental right of children to have both a mother and a father. As child rights activist Katy Faust, founder of Them Before Us, says, ‘Children are the victims of marriage equality,’” Mainwaring sais.
Interestingly, the woman Mainwaring brought up, Katy Faust, was brought up in a lesbian household.
Protests outside of the parliament saw roughly 1,500 people standing in opposition to the law who could be heard chanting “hands off our children.”
The Greek Orthodox Church is staunchly against the legislation which sent a letter to Greece’s Parliament stating that the legislation disregards the rights of vulnerable children for the desires of adults who identify as homosexual, “children are neither pets nor accessories,” said the Holy Synod which is the Church’s governing body, “to be parented by same-sex couples and grow up without a father or mother in an environment of confusing gender roles.”
The head of the conservative Victory Party, Dmititris Natsios, told the Associated Press “Unfortunately, the woke agenda has also reached Greece and that agenda includes the marriage of homosexuals.”
“Greece is a Christian Orthodox country and our tradition does not allow this. … We know and respect one type of marriage: The Orthodox Christian wedding. Our Constitution also does not provide for this, so this bill is unconstitutional and runs counter to our faith in Christ,” Natsios said.
Like many European counterparts, Mitsotakis has ruled out the possibility of legal surrogacy, at least for now.
“The idea of women who are turned into child-producing machines on demand … that is not going to happen,” he declared.
