Nativity Scene With Two Marys Sparks Controversy
Priest Vitaliano Della Sala at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Capocastello di Mercogliano, Italy is facing backlash after an online petition has circulated calling on his superior to intervene after the priest set up a nativity scene with two Marys and no Joseph.
The petition has attracted more than 21,000 signatures and claims the scene contradicts several of the Catholic Church’s teachings about family, same-sex parenting and surrogacy.
Priest Della Sala is a well known leftist in Italy who often expresses sympathy for those living the LGBT lifestyle.
Despite the pushback, the priest is defending his disgustingly warped depiction of Jesus’s birth in saying, “I wanted to show with this scene that families are no longer just the traditional ones… In our parishes, we see more and more children from the new types of families that exist and are part of our society, children of separated and divorced people, gay couples, single people, young mothers.” The family structure of one man and one woman was created by God for a reason (Colossians 3:18-21). He doesn’t make mistakes. The acceptance of this anti-God structure of family is the acceptance of an extremely dangerous lie (Romans 1:22-25).
Was Della Sala not taught that his opinions and feelings have no rooting within the Word of God or is he ignoring the fact that they must come into full submission to what God has spoken in His Word on the issue of LGBT lifestyles?
We mustn’t be surprised with this blatant act of heresy. Although this happened in Italy, the ideology driving this madness is already here in North American churches and is being preached from pulpits where pastors have chosen wokeness over holiness.
Whether a person feels comfortable with what the Bible has to say on the issue of human sexuality or the birth of Jesus or the family structure doesn’t matter here, what matters is that if one calls themself a Christian, we are to be “Christ like” and to know that which God has spoken in His Word to be absolutely true. Jesus clearly states that we must be all in (hot) or not in at all (cold), if we are to be in the mushy middle (lukewarm) he will spit us out of his mouth! (Romans 3:15-17)
It is blasphemous of a priest, pastor, bishop or any Christian for that matter to advocate for the inclusion of a lifestyle within the Christian faith that pins itself against that which God has ordained – it is like a minister comforting a person on their way to hell. Where is the love of God in that? There is none. To love is to speak the absolute truth which is God’s Word for it alone can save.
As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, we aren’t just celebrating another good man’s birth, but we celebrate the arrival of God incarnate. THE LIGHT of the world entering into history, the bridge which made it possible for humanity to come back into fellowship with God.
The story of Jesus’ birth isn’t menial, it is supernatural. It is a part of our redemption story; it needs no additions, subtractions or modifications to fit our culture’s standards. This year, our communities don’t need to see two Marys in a manger scene with Jesus, they need the LIGHT of life to flood their hearts and that comes from receiving Jesus as their Lord and Savior. This Christmas, the world needs to know our “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father and our Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
