Ex-FBI Chief Who ‘Investigated’ Trump, Ends Up in Jail?
Charles McGonigal, a special agent for the FBI, has received a sentence of four or more years in prison for providing intelligence to a Russian oligarch, Oleg Deripaska, after leaving his post in 2019.
Does McGonigal’s name ring a bell? That’s because he was the FBI agent who helped launch the infamous Trump-Russia hoax that filled the headlines of newspapers and media channels for years.
Much of the preliminary work that built the Crossfire Hurricane investigation had been conducted by McGonigal who, at the time, was legally obligated to inform the FBI of his relationship with foreign officials but he failed to do so.
According to US Attorney Damian Williams, McGonigal “violated the trust his country placed in him by using his high-level position at the FBI to prepare for his future in business … Once he left public service, he jeopardized our national security.”
Although the former chief of counterintelligence asked for a “second chance” in court, the prosecution pressed for a maximum sentence of five years. One prosecutor, Hagan Scotten, argued, “Poverty did not motivate this crime, your honor. Greed did. It was a betrayal.”
In July 2016, McGonigal held a crucial role in initiating a case into the alleged collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign. This was the epitome of a witch hunt. Special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the matter failed to produce evidence to support the $30 million dollar witch hunt McGonigal assisted in.
Many will focus this case around former President Trump, but that is only one aspect to this story. Let’s take a step back and see the bigger picture.
Like President Trump or not, this is a move towards the restoration process within the political landscape of America. The need for equal application of law and proper procedure is necessary for the country as a whole.
Uneven scales of justice can only stand so long. For the sake of our country at present and the generations to come, seeking to protect, restore, and apply justice is key. Despite a person’s political persuasion, we as believers can rejoice that justice has finally been upheld in a hyper-politicized culture.
Know that when we see a headline, it’s merely a glimpse into a situation, it’s never the full story. No matter how negative or positive a story may be, the media doesn’t like to spend time on the fallout of the story because they want us fixated on their painted narrative instead of the end result.
As many seek to persuade and lead us in one direction, we are the one’s who can obtain a higher perspective that supersedes that of the narrative others try to force feed us. How do we obtain a higher perspective? Through prayer.
Here are two prayer points we can take immediate action on:
- Pray that righteous laws would not only be established in our land but that they would be followed through on as well (Micah 6:8).
- Pray that those who are elected to be our representatives in the halls of government be devoted to the cause of freedom and justice and righteousness at all times.
“And the effect of righteousness will be peace, And the result of righteousness will be quietness and confident trust forever. Then my people will live in a peaceful surrounding, And in secure dwellings and in undisturbed resting places.” Isaiah 32:16-17
